The Plum-Headed Parakeet (Psittacula cyanocephala) is a beautiful and intelligent parakeet native to the Indian Subcontinent. This colorful species belongs to the parrot family Psittacidae and is known for its striking plum-colored head, long tail, active personality, and graceful flight.

Appearance and Colors

Plum-Headed Parakeets are primarily green, but males and females have noticeably different head coloration.

The male has a bright red head that gradually changes to purple-blue around the back of the crown, nape, and cheeks. He also has a narrow black collar, a greenish collar area below it, a black chin stripe, and a red shoulder patch.

The rump and tail are bluish-green, with white tips on the tail feathers. The upper mandible is orange-yellow, while the lower mandible is dark.

The female has a dull bluish-gray head. She lacks the male’s black and greenish collar, chin stripe, and red shoulder patch. Her upper mandible is generally corn-yellow.

Young birds have green heads, and both mandibles are yellowish. Adult head coloration develops as the bird matures.

Size

Plum-Headed Parakeets are approximately 8 inches in body length, with a long tail that can bring their total length to around 13 inches when fully grown.

Lifespan

With proper care, Plum-Headed Parakeets can live for approximately 30 years.

Behavior and Temperament
