The European Greenfinch (Chloris chloris), also known simply as the Greenfinch, is a small passerine bird from the finch family, Fringillidae. It is widespread across Europe, North Africa, and parts of Southwest Asia. The species has also been introduced to Australia and New Zealand.

European Greenfinch Appearance

The European Greenfinch measures about 15 cm (5.9 inches) in length. Its wingspan is approximately 24.5 to 27.5 cm (9.6 to 10.8 inches).

Adult Greenfinches are mainly green, with bright yellow markings on the wings and tail. Females and young birds are generally duller. They often have more brown coloring on the back.

The species has a thick, conical bill that is well suited for eating seeds.

Song and Behavior

The European Greenfinch has a distinctive and pleasant song. Its vocalizations include lively trills and twitters, often mixed with characteristic wheezing sounds.

During courtship, the male performs a beautiful butterfly-like display flight. This behavior makes the Greenfinch an interesting addition to a suitable aviary.

Breeding

The chicks hatch covered in thick, grayish-white down. Both parents feed the young. In the early days, the chicks receive insect larvae. Later, the parents provide regurgitated food made largely from seeds.

Young birds leave the nest at around 13 days but are not yet capable of strong flight. They usually become fully fledged at approximately 16–18 days after hatching.

European Greenfinches can produce two or three broods per year when conditions are suitable.

DNA Gender Testing
