The long-tailed Paradise Whydah or Eastern Paradise Whydah (Vidua paradisaea) is a small brown sparrow-like bird of Eastern Africa, from eastern South Sudan to southern Angola. During the breeding season the male moults into breeding plumage that consists of a black head and back, rusty brown breast, bright yellow nape, and buffy white abdomen with broad, elongated black tail feathers up to 36 cm long (approximately three times the length of its body). Males and females are almost indistinguishable outside of the breeding season. It is a brood parasite to the green-winged pytilia. Male long-tailed paradise Whydahs imitate the song of the male green-winged pytilia.
The Paradise Whydah, also known as the Eastern Paradise Whydah (Vidua paradisaea), is a small, sparrow-like bird native to Eastern Africa. It can be found from eastern South Sudan to southern Angola. Paradise Whydahs are especially known for the male’s spectacular breeding plumage and exceptionally long tail feathers.
At Aviora Haven, the Paradise Whydah is a fascinating choice for experienced bird enthusiasts who appreciate unique finch species.
During the breeding season, the male Paradise Whydah develops striking plumage. His head and back become black, while the breast is rusty brown. The nape is bright yellow, and the abdomen is buffy white.
The most remarkable feature is the male’s long black tail. The ornamental tail feathers can reach approximately 36 cm (14 inches), which is about three times the length of his body.
Outside the breeding season, males lose their distinctive breeding plumage. At this time, males and females look very similar, making them difficult to distinguish visually.
Paradise Whydahs are native to Eastern Africa. They are found across parts of South Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Angola.
Paradise Whydahs are generally peaceful birds. However, some individuals may become territorial or aggressive during the breeding season. Providing enough space and monitoring interactions can help reduce conflicts.
Breeding Paradise Whydahs can be challenging because they are brood parasites. In the wild, they rely on the nests of Green-winged Pytilias to raise their young.
Male Paradise Whydahs also imitate the song of the male Green-winged Pytilia. Their chicks are larger and louder than the host’s chicks, which can result in the foster parents giving them more attention.
Captive breeding requires careful planning. A male is typically given access to multiple females, and suitable active Green-winged Pytilia nests are needed for successful reproduction.
Because of these specialized breeding requirements, Paradise Whydahs are better suited to experienced aviculturists.
Paradise Whydahs are difficult to sex when they are not in breeding plumage. During the breeding season, males develop their distinctive black, chestnut, yellow, and buff coloration along with their long ornamental tail feathers.
DNA testing may be used when visual identification is uncertain. If a gender option is not available for a bird, DNA testing may be available for an additional fee. Testing can also add several weeks to the estimated delivery time.
A varied diet helps support the health and activity of Paradise Whydahs. Their diet can include:
Fresh food should be provided appropriately and replaced regularly to maintain freshness.
The Paradise Whydah is an unusual and visually impressive finch, especially when the male is in breeding plumage. Its fascinating breeding behavior and long ornamental tail make it an interesting addition for experienced bird keepers.
If you are looking for a unique finch with distinctive seasonal coloration, the Paradise Whydah from Aviora Haven may be an excellent addition to your collection.
