The Gouldian Finch (Erythrura gouldiae), also known as the Lady Gouldian Finch, Gould’s Finch, or Rainbow Finch, is one of Australia’s most colorful finches.
The species was described by British ornithological artist John Gould in 1844 and named after his wife, Elizabeth. In Australia, it is commonly called the Gouldian Finch.
Gouldian Finches belong to the Estrildidae family. Both males and females display beautiful combinations of green, yellow, red, and black. Females are generally less brightly colored than males.
The green-backed Gouldian Finch is commonly referred to as the normal color variety. This listing is specifically for a black-head male only.
Gouldian Finches are small, colorful aviary birds that thrive in spacious environments with plenty of room to move and explore. They particularly enjoy large, planted aviaries.
Gouldian Finches are native to Northern Australia.
Gouldian Finches have soft and pleasant vocalizations.

With proper care, a Lady Gouldian Finch can live for approximately 10 years.
Male and female Gouldian Finches both have colorful plumage, but males are generally brighter and more intensely colored.
Green-backed Gouldians are generally relatively easy to sex based on their coloration.
This listing is for a black-head male only.
Lady Gouldian Finches are best enjoyed as watching birds rather than handling birds. They generally do not enjoy being held, and excessive handling can cause significant stress.
Because Gouldian Finches can be sensitive to stress, they are not generally recommended for inexperienced bird keepers. A calm environment, proper nutrition, and good aviary management are important for their well-being.
In the wild, Gouldian Finches typically nest in tree cavities, often near sources of water. They generally breed during the early part of the dry season when food is plentiful.
The male performs an impressive courtship display. He may bob, ruffle his feathers, expand his chest, and display his colorful head and body plumage to attract the female.
A female usually lays approximately 4–8 eggs. Both parents participate in caring for the eggs and chicks. The female generally incubates the eggs at night, while both parents help during the daytime.
Young Gouldian Finches typically leave the nest at around 19–23 days and become independent at approximately 40 days.
For captive breeding, Gouldian Finches should generally be at least one year old. They prefer a small, covered nesting area, such as a wooden nest box or covered basket.
A wooden nest box is often a practical choice because it is easier to access and reduces the chance of toes becoming caught in nesting material. Gouldian Finches do not always build substantial nests, so providing suitable nesting material can help the parents get started.
A varied and nutritious diet is important for Gouldian Finches. Recommended foods can include:
Fresh, clean water should always be available.
If there is no gender option listed for a bird on our website, that species may be considered monomorphic, meaning visual sexing can be difficult.
DNA testing is available when offered for an additional $149 per bird to help determine the desired gender. Results may take approximately 3–6 or more weeks, which can add to the estimated delivery time.
Please see our FAQs for additional information.
At Aviora Haven, we do our best to provide the color combination requested by each customer. However, Gouldian Finch colors and availability can vary naturally.
We may not always have the exact head color or mutation requested. If possible, we greatly appreciate flexibility when selecting your bird.
